Exeter City manager Matt Taylor said he admired the way his side played in the aftermath of the death of Kevin Miller.
The former Exeter City goalkeeper passed away earlier this week aged 57.
Miller played more than 200 games for the Grecians and is regarded as one of the club’s best-ever goalkeepers.
He had been part of Exeter’s coaching staff until June this year and worked with many of the current playing squad.
City paid tribute to Miller with a minute’s applause before their 0-0 draw with Tranmere Rovers in League Two.
“It’s a tragedy what’s happened this week and some of the ones who’ve been here for a longer period of time, staff included, have known Kevin an awful a long time, and on a personal level as well,” Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.
“So [it] was terrible to hear that in the middle of the week and for the players to perform the way they did, I think both teams looked a bit leggy towards the end.
“But I can understand why our squad and my group felt a little bit more of that fatigue because the strain they’ve been under this week.”
On their field Exeter failed to score for the third successive League Two game as they dropped to 20th place in the table.
They had three shots on target and had their best efforts from set pieces as Josh Gordon and Danny Rose continue to play together up front.
“Danny’s still getting up to speed, Josh has been with us for longer so I’m pleased with Josh’s output from a physical perspective, but Danny’s got an awful lot more to give,” Taylor said.
“In terms of those set-piece opportunities or the crosses in the box, that’s where he’s scored his goals throughout his career so we needed to get him on the end of those moments.
“That will keep on developing, keep on progressing, we’ll keep on assessing what other options we’ve got at the top of the pitch, but I don’t think I can hold their lack of finishing towards the centre-forwards.
“A lack of creation throughout the whole team was probably what resulted, but it’s hard to break down a team like Tranmere and they’ve been very similar in terms of what our backline have done.”
