Truro City striker Jack Stretton has the potential to be one of the National League South’s best strikers, believes manager John Askey.
Stretton’s two late goals ensured the Tinners came from a goal down to win 2-1 at league leaders Maidstone United.
The victory lifts the Cornish side up to sixth in the division, two points off the top of the table with a game in hand.
Stretton scored for the first time since March, with his pair of goals doubling his tally for Truro since joining in January.
“I thought once he scored he looked a different player,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.
“I think he’s been huffing and puffing and his endeavour is always there, but you never felt as though his confidence was there.
“But once he scored that first one he looked a different player and hopefully he’ll take that now into the rest of the season.
“If he plays like that then there aren’t going to be too many players better than him in this league.”
The victory ended a two-game winless run for Askey’s side, who are looking to bounce back after being relegated from the National League last season.
Bismarck Adjei-Boateng gave the hosts a 42nd-minute lead from a penalty before Harvey Greenslade headed against the Maidstone crossbar.
It took until the 76th minute for Truro to break through as Stretton fired in from Connor Riley-Lowe’s cross.
Four minutes later he turned the game around as he headed in a Will Dean effort.
He had chances to add to his tally before Maidstone struck the post and had an effort cleared off the line as they tried in vain to salvage a point.
“It’s great, but it means nothing yet, so we’ll enjoy this and we can enjoy it a little bit more because we’ve got a cup game on Saturday and it’s worked out really well for us,” added Askey.
“I think it was two years ago we came here and a similar situation, we were 1-0 down, not that long to go and managed to win 2-1 and that kick-started our season.
“I don’t feels as though we need our season kick-starting, but it’s not an easy place to come and it’s a really, really good result.”
