The New York Knicks played their first game since being crowned NBA Champions back in June. This game was of much lesser significance, but it is the start of the Knicks’ attempt at becoming the first back-to-back champions since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018.
Up first on the docket, both in the regular season and in the preseason are LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers. While James didn’t play in the preseason opener for both teams on Monday night, there was already a different feel around a Sixers squad that now boasts James, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe.
Knicks head coach Mike Brown had a number of coaching stops before landing with the New York Knicks last season. His first head coaching position was actually with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he coached James and the Cavs to the 2007 NBA Finals and to back-to-back 60+ win seasons.

Brown was asked about James ahead of Monday night’s contest, and LeBron’s former coach spoke glowingly about the star.
“The first thing, I guess like year 24 is insane,” Brown said. “It’s unheard of. It’s not human. People talk about Wemby being not human because of what he can do for his size. You got to throw LeBron in that category because of his durability and still doing it at the age that he has at a high level. It’s amazing to watch, but if there’s anybody that’s going to do it, he’s going to do it because even when he was young, he was really diligent about taking care of his body and he was not afraid to ask the vets, like Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who was one of the best in terms of taking care of his body, he was not afraid to ask him what he does daily and then follow his lead. So just an amazing, amazing run for one of the all-time greats.”

The Knicks are coming into this season as one of the favorites to repeat as NBA Champions. As we’ve seen, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs stand in the way, as do the Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers.
