Arch Manning has led to the Texas Longhorns matching an Alabama record he will have wanted to avoid.
The Texas Longhorns’ loss against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday is one that the team will want to forget as soon as possible. The team was ranked No. 1 on the AP Poll heading into the weekend, and were undefeated before the 27-24 defeat.
It is unfortunate, but a majority of the blame for Texas’ loss lies with quarterback Arch Manning. The 22-year-old threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter which saw his team give up 17 points. In the process, he has contributed to the Longhorns matching a terrible record.
Texas become only the second AP No. 1 ranked team to lose to an unranked team since 2010 after Alabama
Manning’s fourth quarter collapse will have hurt his NFL draft stock as much as it has hurt the fans. There is very little worse than giving up a comeback, but giving up a comeback to opposition which is much inferior is one of those things.
OU was unranked coming into the weekend. They had a 2-2 record and had struggled quite a bit. Losing to the Sooners has put Manning and his team in some unwanted company.
“With their loss to Oklahoma, Texas joined Alabama as the only two AP No. 1 teams to lose to unranked opponents since 2010,” ESPN insights posted on X. In 2024, the Crimson Tide lost against unranked Vanderbilt, losing 40-35 on the road.
For Manning and the Longhorns, the key will be to bounce back as soon as possible. Their next game against the Florida Gators is the perfect opportunity for them to do so. While this was an embarrassing loss, sports fans do have short memories, so a winning run could be just the answer.
