Despite pleas from some Washington fans and a specific media member, the Commanders do not plan any “imminent” changes to head coach Dan Quinn’s job status.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport joined ESPN’s “Big Day” with host Peter Schrager on Tuesday and addressed Quinn’s status after Sunday’s embarrassing end-of-game gaffe against the New York Giants.
“Based on the people I’ve spoken with, I do not expect imminent changes surrounding Dan Quinn or the Washington Commanders,” Rapoport said.
“I would be surprised if there is a change right now. But here’s what this game did, and in a way, it’s unfair. It’s 13 seconds that this man right here (pointing at Quinn), who is an established coach in the NFL, is judged upon. That’s the job. When it matters the absolute most, you gotta have it. Do you deliver for your team? Is your team ready? And so, talking about (quarterback) Jayden Daniels, his offensive coordinator (David Blough), it falls on Dan Quinn. He knows it. That is the job that he took. What this loss/tie did was put all of the eyeballs on Dan Quinn. It is now coming for him. If the Commanders continue to lose, then we are going to be talking about Dan Quinn and his job security until they start winning or until it changes. It sucks. That is the reality of his job, and he knows it.”

A much more balanced report from Rapoport here. Everything he said was true. No matter who was ultimately at fault for Sunday’s end-of-game nightmare that cost Washington a win, everything comes back to Quinn. He could’ve nixed the final play call, told David Blough to run the clock down, spike the ball, and send in kicker Drew Stevens to attempt the game-winning field goal. He didn’t. In this case, Quinn trusted his offensive coordinator and quarterback, and whether anyone wants to admit it, they let him down.
Quinn shouldn’t be fired over a single play from Sunday’s game. However, if you want to talk about his record, 3-13-1 in his last 17 games, that is much fairer. Quinn still has time to turn things around, but that time is running out. After seeing the continuous mistakes on offense and the second-half collapses on defense, is a turnaround even possible?
