The Washington Huskies had no answer for one of the nation’s fastest-rising MLB draft prospects on Friday night in a 5-0 loss to starter Mason Edwards and the No. 13 USC Trojans.
Edwards, a Los Angeles, California product of Palisades High School who is ranked as the No. 88 prospect in the 2026 MLB draft class by MLB Pipeline, has been nothing short of dominant throughout his junior season and had one of his best outings of the season against the Huskies. He limited coach Eddie Smith’s team to just a hit (he’s now allowed just 7 on the season) and 3 walks with a season-high 12 strikeouts over 6 innings of work as he lowered his ERA to 0.25 in his final year of eligibility and improved to 5-0.
Washington didn’t fare much better against Gavin Lauridsen, who worked the final 3 innings in relief of Edwards and allowed just a hit and a walk with 4 strikeouts to earn his second save of the year.

Against an impossibly high bar, Noah Kenney took the loss for the Huskies and dropped to 1-2 on the season. He let up 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, before he was relieved by Tommy Brandenburg, who was perfect over the final 2 2/3 innings.
First baseman Adrian Lopez did most of the damage for the Trojans, as he went 2-for-3 with 3 runs batted in, while second baseman Abbrie Covarrubias chipped in with a 2-for-4 day and scored 3 runs.
With the loss, the Huskies fell to 9-12 on the season and 4-3 in Big Ten play. The two teams will return to the field for the second installment of their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. PT.
