The New York Jets know exactly what they have in Garrett Wilson. The former first-round pick has already established himself as one of the NFL’s premier receivers and remains the focal point of New York’s passing attack.
The bigger question entering the 2026 season is who emerges as the consistent secondary option. According to ESPN’s Ben Solak, that answer could ultimately determine just how far the Jets go.
In a recent breakdown identifying one X-factor for every NFL team, Solak selected wide receiver Adonai Mitchell as the player most capable of dramatically influencing New York’s season. The logic is easy to understand. Mitchell has flashed intriguing talent since entering the league but has struggled to put everything together consistently. Drops, penalties, and inconsistency helped contribute to a disappointing stint with the Indianapolis Colts before he was traded to the Jets.
Despite those setbacks, Solak believes Mitchell possesses more upside than many realize. It isn’t the first time this has been said, so maybe there’s something to it.
“If he starts catching the ball consistently and protecting it afterward, he’ll earn a three-level role.”
The opportunity certainly appears to be there. Oh, and by the way, Wilson is already a fan of his teammate.
Remove Wilson from the discussion, and the Jets enter the season with more questions than answers at wide receiver. Omar Cooper Jr. remains a promising young talent, while Isaiah Williams, Arian Smith and Tim Patrick each bring different strengths to the position group. None, however, have firmly established themselves as a clear No. 2 target.
That leaves the door wide open for Mitchell. Solak also pointed to Mitchell’s fit alongside Geno Smith, noting the veteran quarterback’s willingness to challenge defenses and trust receivers in contested situations. Those traits could play directly into Mitchell’s strengths.
The Jets believe they have assembled a stronger supporting cast around Smith this offseason. If Mitchell finally delivers the breakout season many envisioned when he entered the league, New York’s offense could become far more dangerous than many expect.
