The Cincinnati Bengals went out and got a boost to the pass rush in NFL free agency with Boye Mafe.
But there’s an outside chance the Bengals aren’t done.
Al Golden’s Bengals defense still needs rotational pass-rushing help. It also continues to need veteran leaders to help along the likes of first-round projects like Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart.
Adding Jonathan Allen in free agency helps the rotation and leadership angle.
But it’s pretty hard to ignore the fact a name like Cameron Jordan of the New Orleans Saints is still out there.
Jordan recently told reporters that he’s talked about two or three teams in NFL free agency, with ESPN’s Katherine Terrell providing the quotes: “Value means position, rotation, monetary sure, but more along the lines that if I want to get 10, 12, 13 sacks next season, I want to be in the best position to do so.”
Technically speaking, maybe there’s not room for that type of individual production for Jordan with the Bengals while they give snaps to the younger guys. But there’s certainly room for playoff contention if he helps boost the defense.
And for the Bengals, Jordan might turn 37 in July, but he’s still plenty productive: He just had 10.5 sacks last year. He ranked 24th out of 115 edges at PFF.
If the price is right, one would think the Bengals might overlook their old rules around age in free agency, given the blend of rotational production and mentorship Jordan could bring.
Jordan said he thinks the Saints can be in Super Bowl contention the next 2 years, and there’s value there, because 2-3 years is about what he’s got left in the tank.
