Brad Stevens is undoubtedly one of the best front office executives in the NBA. Since replacing Danny Ainge as the Boston Celtics’ President of Basketball Operations, Stevens has built a solid pipeline between the Maine Celtics and Boston and has found value in the draft, free agency market and in trades. Even this season, when the Celtics were cutting costs, he found some hidden gems in Luka Garza, Josh Minott and rookie Hugo Gonzalez.
The problem is, when you have an elite talent on the books, other teams around the NBA are bound to be interested in trying to pry it away. According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, that’s exactly what the Dallas Mavericks are hoping to do, as Stevens is on a short list of elite-level front office executives to fill their currently vacant front office role.
“As the dust settles on the Mavericks’ season, interest is building in who will lead Dallas in the next one,” Mannix reported. “Armed with Cooper Flagg, Kyrie Irving and another high lottery pick, the Mavs’ top front office job is an appealing one. And I’m told that Patrick Dumont, the team’s governor, is aiming high. Among the names on Dumont’s wish list, per league sources: Oklahoma City executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti, Minnesota president of basketball operations Tim Connelly and Boston president Brad Stevens. Cleveland top exec Koby Altman’s name is also in the mix, a source said.”
Stevens has one of the most prestigious jobs in basketball. The Celtics have been perennial contenders throughout his tenure in the front office. Furthermore, his family is settled in the area, as he has been associated with the franchise since becoming its head coach in 2013.
Dallas may be interested in acquiring Stevens, but the chances of that happening are slim to none. Still, it makes sense why they would hold an interest in him. After all, every team should aim high when rebuilding. The issue is, Stevens is (hopefully) out of their reach.
