It’s now the Seattle Mariners‘ turn.
The Detroit Tigers kept Kevin McGonigle on the Opening Day roster. The St. Louis Cardinals did the same with JJ Wetherholt.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will give Konnor Griffin his MLB debut on Friday for their home opener.
That just leaves the Mariners and Colt Emerson.
All four of those guys were top-10 prospects in the sport before Opening Day, and all four had a case to be on their teams’ initial MLB rosters.
The Tigers and Cardinals kept their phenoms up and haven’t regretted it one bit so far.
The Pirates gave Griffin just a week in Triple-A, and now he’s coming to the majors.
Emerson was sent-down to Triple-A, as well, and he hasn’t yet gotten the call back, although it can’t be too far off.
The Mariners just gave Emerson a massive contract extension, and so the incentive they might’ve had to keep him down for service time reasons has gone away.
Now it’s simply about Seattle finding the best way to incorporate Emerson into their lineup — it sounds like they may play him at third base in the early going, not shortstop. That raises the question of where to play Brendan Donovan.
But considering Emerson’s talent, almost every question is just a matter of figuring something out, not a reason to keep him out of the majors.
And given that all his contemporaries are up now, that just leaves Emerson to get the call that he and everyone else knows is coming.
