The true difference maker for the Seattle Seahawks in their Super Bowl season was their special teams. This unit went from being an absolute liability in 2024 to arguably being the reason why they were able to hoist their second Lombardi. No one spent more on their special teams than the Seahawks did, and they got what they paid for as they had the league’s best unit in this often overlooked phase of the game.
Now, the Seahawks have added another chess piece to this unit. On Wednesday morning, the Seahawks completed a trade with the New York Jets to acquire wide receiver/special teamer Irv Charles. Seattle has given the Jets a 2028 conditional seventh round pick in exchange for Charles’ services.
Charles is considered to be a special teams gunner, and will likely compete with sixth round rookie Emmanuel Henderson Jr. from Kansas for the role. Charles has made 14 tackles as a gunner in his career. Sadly, he did miss the 2025 season due to an ACL injury suffered towards the end of the 2024 campaign.
Clearly, there is something there that general manager John Schneider sees that makes giving up a coveted draft pick in two years worth it to obtain Charles. We will monitor this transaction closely during OTA’s and later into training camp.
