ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Braxton Woodson ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns, Jackson Gutierrez added two touchdowns of his own, and Navy cruised by FCS member Towson 42-15 in the Midshipmen’s season opener on Saturday.
Navy, which received 10 poll points in the preseason AP poll, racked up 506 yards on the ground with 14 players having at least one carry. Vic Listorti had 81 yards on 11 carries, and Gutierrez managed 31 yards along with his two scores.
Woodson opened the scoring with a 38-yard rush on Navy’s first drive of the game. The Midshipmen marched 75 yards in 3:01.
Listorti added a 35-yard dash to extend the Midshipmen’s lead to 14-0 before the end of the first.
Towson got within single-digits twice off two long passing touchdowns by sophomore Andrew Indorf. He connected with Aaron Enterline for 48 yards to begin the second quarter, and completed a 30-yarder to Jacob Zollar on the next Tiger drive.
Indorf finished 13-of-18 passing for 208 yards.
Woodson added touchdown runs of 8 and 4 yards in the second and fourth quarters. He entered the season as the starter after just one start in each of his prior three seasons.
The Midshipmen have gone on to play in a bowl game the past six times they won their season opener.
