C.J. Stroud gave the Houston Texans a chance to win on Sunday, but another productive performance ended with the same result. Houston carried a halftime lead against Dallas and remained in control until the closing stages.
n
The Texans still walked away from Reliant Stadium without a victory. The loss dropped Houston to 0-4 and left Stroud explaining why the team cannot expect its recent division titles and playoff appearances to help solve its current problems.

C.J. Stroud Uses iPhone Comparison To Address Texans’ Start
n
Stroud turned to a lesson from his college career at Ohio State while discussing why Houston must continue adjusting from one season to the next.
n
n
“I remember in college, Coach [Ryan] Day used to always say you have to be an iPhone,” Stroud said. “You have to upgrade every year. You have to upgrade whatever that looks like from personnel to plays to execution. Everything has to rise up.”
n
The Texans won the AFC South and reached the divisional round in both 2023 and 2024. They finished 10-7 in each season, reaching the playoffs during Stroud’s first two years with the team.

nThose results have not helped Houston avoid a winless start in 2026.
n
“Every year is different,” Stroud said. “Last year’s bread isn’t going to feed us this year. You have to find new ways.”
n
Stroud’s point was not limited to changing personnel or adding new plays. He believes the Texans must improve their execution and stop assuming that what worked during previous seasons will continue to produce the same results.

Texans’ Mistakes Leave C.J. Stroud Looking for Answers
n
Stroud completed 21 of 31 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Houston’s 34-30 loss to Dallas. Nico Collins caught seven passes for 118 yards and both touchdowns in his return from a hamstring injury.
n
Houston also took a 10-point lead into halftime. Dallas erased that advantage by scoring 28 points in the second half, with Dak Prescott finding CeeDee Lamb for the winning touchdown with 40 seconds remaining.
n
n
The Texans’ problems extended beyond the final drive. Houston committed 13 penalties for 90 yards and converted only three of its 10 third-down attempts.
n
“It’s hard to win football games when you have 13 penalties,” Stroud said. “A lot of those were critical as well.”
n
Stroud refused to separate his performance from the result despite finishing without a turnover.
n
n
“We’re all we got. Nobody is coming to save us,” he said. “We have to make sure we’re looking ourselves in the eye, being accountable and honest and going to work.”
n
Houston will now face another 0-4 team when it visits Tennessee in Week 5.
n
For Stroud, the Texans cannot rely on what they accomplished over the previous two seasons. Their current situation will only change if they find a way to improve now.
